Are Inkjet Printers now Viable for the Office?

Here at TwoPointZero HQ, we’re looking for a new printer. I’ve always gone for Colour Laser Printers in the past because they are reliable, fast and cheap to run.

Whilst having a look at the options available, I’ve come across the HP OfficeJet Pro X range of printers. They are inkjet printers but do up to 70 pages per minute.

Apparently, they will print acceptably on normal printer paper, the ink dries quickly and as an additional bonus claim to cost less to run than a Colour Laser Printer.

They are able to do this because unlike traditional inkjet printers, they have a wide cartridge which covers the entire width of the paper (called HP Pagewide Technology), rather than having a small cartridge which moves across squirting ink out as it goes. They use pigment based inks which dry really quickly.

We’re looking for a multifunction device which does scanning as well, we also want duplex and for it to be network capable so we can connect it straight into our network instead of into an individual PC.

We’ve decided to give it a try, we’re going to go for the snappily named HP OfficeJet Pro X476dw, it has the following features:

  • Up to 55 Pages per minute
  • Automatic Double Sided Printing
  • HP Pagewide Technology with pigmented inks
  • Network and Wireless
  • Airprint (so we can print straight from Apple devices like iPhones and iPads)
  • A Colour touchscreen
  • A 500 Sheet Input Tray

It also comes with £100 cash back making it really cheap!

Once we’ve received it and got used to it, I’ll post another blog to let you know whether it lives up to its marketing pitch!
