Cyber Essentials - What is it and do you need it?

Theres a question that seems to be coming up more and more when we’re speaking to our clients lately:

“Do you have a Cyber Essentials certification?”

A few years ago, most companies hadn’t heard of it or saw it as a total nightmare that they wanted to avoid at all costs.

Now it’s increasingly being asked for when working with larger organisations, public sector bodies, or even within supply chains.

In simple terms, Cyber Essentials shows that your business has the key basic protections in place to guard against common cyber threats.

It covers things like:
• Secure systems and firewalls
• Access control for users
• Protection against malware
• Keeping systems and software up to date

It’s not just about compliance — it’s about giving customers and partners confidence that your business takes security seriously. You can also add that little badge to your email footers, marketing materials etc.

We’ve been seeing this come up more and more recently when speaking with clients and reviewing their systems.

It’s usually much more straightforward than people expect, but it often highlights a few areas that need tightening up.

If anyone’s unsure what’s involved or has started seeing Cyber Essentials appear in supplier questionnaires, we offer pre certification audits and can carry out both Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus for your business, hassle free and efficiently, no matter what the size.
